The Campaign for a United America (CUA) is now coming to a close. For the last year and a half, Center for New Community through the work of CUA has built substantial relationships with institutions, organizations and individuals around the country and has served as the impetus for national civil and human rights groups to begin educating the public on the racism within the anti-immigrant movement.
CUA promoted dialogue respectful to the contributions of all community members, including our immigrant friends and neighbors, and stood with the majority of Americans who find themselves alarmed by the increasingly scornful actions and hateful rhetoric of the anti-immigrant movement's intolerant agenda. We built relationships around the country with those willing to take a stand and educate others in their communities about the bigotry propagated by nativist groups. Together we changed public discourse around immigration and increased awareness by news media about anti-immigrant extremists like the Federation for American Immigration Reform, the Center for Immigration Studies, and NumbersUSA.
Now it is time to move forward in the course and scope of our work. Center for New Community has launched a new campaign to counter the anti-immigrant movement through direct action and micro-targeting. We continue our work on the Which Way Forward Initiative, bringing together black leaders to dialogue on immigration, and also the CUA Hip-Hop Project is going strong in Arizona. This website will now become static but we hope the public will continue to find the information useful. Thank you to all who have made the Campaign for a United America such a huge success! We appreciate your dedication, collaboration, and support and look forward to working with you in the future.
Growing up in downtown Los Angeles in the 1960s & 70s, Alycin remembers having classmates from Japan, Mexico and other countries across the world. At a time when many families were abandoning the city for the outlying suburbs, Alycin’s family stayed put. According to Alycin, her mother wanted to work, live and raise her children in a multicultural community where they would be exposed to neighbors who spoke more than a dozen different languages.
